The Secret to Spiritual Growth: Letting Go of Perfectionism in Your Faith Journey
Have you ever felt like no matter how much you pray, read, or serve, it’s never enough? Perfectionism can steal the joy from our relationship with God. It can make our relationship with God feel more like performance than a place of rest and restoration.
Before we go any further, lets recognize perfectionism. Before we talk about releasing perfectionism, let’s identify where it might be showing up in your spiritual life. Do any of these sound familiar?
You feel guilty when missing a quiet time.
You believe you need “earn” God’s love.
You compare your faith journey to others.
If any of these resonate, take a deep breath. You were never meant to carry the weight of perfection.
Faith Was Never About Perfection
Our faith isn’t about perfection. It is meant to be about our connection with God. I want to share why faith isn’t about perfection.
Grace is a gift, not something we achieve. “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift— not from works, so that no one can boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).”
Jesus never demanded perfection. Jesus invited us to rest, not strive. (Matt. 11:28).
God affirms who we are, not just what we do. At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, before He performed any miracles, the Father declared: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” (Matt. 3:17). God’s love isn’t something we have to work for—it’s something we get to receive.
Can we believe this as we set aside our perfectionsim?
How to Release Perfectionism and Embrace Grace
Now that you are aware of where perfectionism has crept into your faith, what’s next? Here are three shifts to help you step into grace:
Replace guilt with gratitude. Instead of dwelling on what you didn’t do, thank God for His presence in what you can do.
Redefine success in your faith journey. What does success look like for you in your spiritual rhythms? Faithfulness isn’t about doing everything perfectly—it’s about showing up even imperfectly. Success looks differently.
Develop grace-filled spiritual rhythms. Find practices that nourish your relationship with God, rather than ones that leave you exhausted.
You Don’t Have to Do More—You Get to Be With Him
God’s love for you isn’t based on how much you do but on who He is. You don’t need to feel guilty. You don’t have to earn His love. He sees you, knows you, and loves you right where you are. Let this be the year you trade perfectionism for presence.
